CORE SUBJECT
Immigration Halt
U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he intends to permanently halt immigration from "third world countries," a day after an Afghan citizen opened fire on two National Guard soldiers in Washington.
Trump wrote on social media platforms: "I will permanently stop immigration from all third world countries to allow the American system to fully recover."
He also threatened to cancel "millions" of accepted applications granted during the presidency of his predecessor Joe Biden, and to "deport anyone who does not provide additional value to the United States."
Trump clarified that he would end all federal assistance to non-Americans and would deport any foreigner who poses a security risk or "does not align with Western civilization."
Trump's angry post, which he concluded by wishing Americans a happy Thanksgiving, represents an escalation in his anti-immigration policy during his second presidential term, which has been marked by a campaign to deport large numbers of immigrants.
He stated: "We will strive to achieve these goals in order to significantly reduce the numbers of illegal and disruptive populations."
This post came after the announcement of the death of Sarah Bickstrom, one of the National Guard members who was shot the day before near the White House, while the other soldier "fights for his life."
The U.S. administration announced following the attack that it would review the permanent residency status of immigrants from 19 countries, including Afghanistan as well as Haiti, Iran, and Venezuela.
