CORE SUBJECT

Dialogue to Avoid Hostilities

The United Nations Special Coordinator in Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, stated that "one year ago, the understanding of the ceasefire came into effect, leading to a swift calm after two months of devastating hostilities and humanitarian suffering on both sides of the Blue Line."

She explained that "this arrangement provided some hope and increased expectations for the possibility of reaching more sustainable solutions amidst a period of transformations in the region."

She noted that "the enhanced presence of the Lebanese Armed Forces in the south of the country, along with the important decisions made by the government, formed the cornerstone of a path towards normalization, yet uncertainty remains."

She added: "For many Lebanese, the conflict continues - albeit at a less intense pace. One does not need a magic crystal ball to understand that as long as the current status quo persists, the specter of renewed hostilities will loom on the horizon."

She pointed out that "the time has come to seize the opportunity available at this moment and recognize its urgency. This applies to the parties on both sides of the Blue Line. Dialogue and negotiations alone will not solve everything, but they will help establish a mutual understanding of the outstanding commitments, and more importantly, pave the way for the security and stability that both parties seek."

She concluded: The time for dialogue is now. There is no challenge that cannot be overcome. A bright future for all is still possible.
