Risks of Smoking
A recent American study revealed that even limited smoking from time to time can cause serious health problems for the heart.
Researchers from several American research institutions, including the Johns Hopkins Center for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention, stated that smoking two to five cigarettes a day increases the risk of heart attacks and death.
The researchers analyzed the results of 22 research papers that included monitoring the health status of more than 300,000 adults over a period of 20 years.
The results of the study published in the scientific journal "PLOS Medicine" showed that individuals who smoke between two to five cigarettes daily have a 50% increased likelihood of developing heart disease, and their chances of dying increase by 60% compared to non-smokers.
The study indicated that the level of risk decreases significantly after 10 years of quitting smoking, although the health harms of smoking persist for up to 30 years after cessation.
Researchers participating in the study stated that "it is noted that smoking poses significant risks to the heart and blood vessels, even when limited doses are consumed."
They added in statements to the medical research site "Health Day" that "the results of this study highlight the importance of smoking cessation and abstinence programs."
