A senior Ukrainian official announced today, Tuesday, that Washington and Kyiv have reached an agreement on the key points of the plan proposed by the United States to end the war in Ukraine.
Rostem Umrov, the former Minister of Defense who now serves as the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine and a member of the Ukrainian negotiation team, stated: "Our delegations have reached a mutual understanding regarding the essential terms of the agreement discussed in Geneva."
Umrov added via the social media platform Facebook: "We are now relying on the support of our European partners in our next steps."
He continued: "We look forward to arranging a visit for the Ukrainian president to the United States at the earliest convenient time in November, to finalize the steps and reach an agreement with President Trump."
US media reported an unnamed American official on Tuesday stating that the Ukrainian government "has agreed to a peace agreement," but the details have yet to be determined.
According to American media, senior officials from the US administration are currently in Abu Dhabi discussing the emerging plan with a Russian delegation.
US Secretary of the Army, Daniel Driscoll, has been in talks with representatives of the Russian government since yesterday, Monday, according to reports from CBS and CNN networks and the Wall Street Journal.
White House spokesperson Caroline Levitt stated on X that there are "some sensitive details, but not insurmountable, that need to be resolved and will require further discussions between Ukraine, Russia, and the United States."
Last week, the United States presented a 28-point plan to end the war that began on February 24, 2022, with the onset of hostilities.
Russian President Vladimir Putin described the initial version of the 28-point plan as "the basis for a final peaceful settlement," but warned against any significant modifications to the agreement in favor of Kyiv.
Media reports are currently focusing on a peace plan that includes about 20 points. The reports from the New York Times and Washington Post, as well as the Politico website, did not disclose the specific details of this plan.
However, according to the New York Times, some of the more controversial elements from the European and Ukrainian perspectives, such as the maximum number of Ukrainian troops and the regional issue concerning future borders between Russia and Ukraine, have been set aside for now.
It added that these aspects will be the subject of subsequent negotiations. The same applies to the proposed ban on the deployment of NATO forces in Ukraine, which was suggested in the previous 28-point US peace plan that became known through media reports.
