CORE SUBJECT
Peace Agreement
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed today, Tuesday, that Kyiv is ready to move forward with the implementation of the US-backed peace agreement.
In a speech before what is known as the "Coalition of the Willing," he clarified that he is prepared to discuss the sensitive points of the agreement with US President Donald Trump, in talks he said should include European allies.
Zelensky also called on European leaders to formulate a framework for deploying a "peacekeeping force" in Ukraine and to continue supporting Kyiv as long as Moscow shows no willingness to end the war.
"Tremendous Progress"
Earlier, White House spokesperson Caroline Levitt stated that last week, the United States made tremendous progress towards reaching a peace agreement by bringing Ukraine and Russia to the negotiating table.
She reported via a tweet on X that there are some minor details that are not insurmountable that need to be resolved.
She also announced that these details would require further talks between Ukraine, Russia, and the United States.
This came after a US official confirmed that Ukraine had agreed to the terms of a potential peace agreement.
The official told ABC News today, Tuesday, that the Ukrainians had agreed to the revised draft of the peace plan.
However, he clarified that "there are some minor details that need to be resolved."
For his part, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed cautious optimism. He stated that his country sees "many prospects" for peace following the US-Ukrainian talks that took place in Geneva last Sunday. Zelensky wrote in a post on X after a phone call with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer that Kyiv sees "many prospects that could make the path to peace real."
He also clarified that "tangible results have been achieved, but there is still much work to be done."
For his part, Starmer confirmed that the Geneva talks made progress between the US and Ukraine towards reaching a revised plan. He stated in a speech before the public council today that the initial draft of the plan included unacceptable points, despite some critical elements, such as security guarantees from the United States and its partners.
He emphasized that Britain is clear about the fundamental principles, namely the necessity of maintaining Ukraine's sovereignty and its ability to defend itself in the future.
Lavrov Hints at Rejection
In contrast, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that his country has not received the revised plan, but hinted at the possibility of rejecting it if it does not respect the spirit of the US-Russian talks that took place last August in Alaska. He said, "If what was agreed upon during the Alaska summit is disregarded, the situation will be completely different," hinting at a potential rejection.
An informed source revealed that the updated agreement does not include a cap on the Ukrainian army (the first version stipulated reducing the army to 600,000).
He pointed out that the clause regarding "amnesty for crimes committed during the Russian-Ukrainian war will not be included in the new version of the peace proposal."
It is worth noting that the first version of the US plan stipulated that Kyiv abandon Crimea and the Donbas region (eastern Ukraine), with Kherson and Zaporizhia (in the south) being demilitarized.
It included the Ukrainian side's abandonment of the dream of joining NATO, reducing the number of armed forces, and not deploying any international forces on Ukrainian territory, which are demands that the Russian side has long insisted upon. It called for holding general elections in Ukraine within 100 days of the cessation of hostilities.
Zelensky is expected to visit the United States in the coming days to finalize the plan, as announced by Rustem Umerov, Secretary of the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council.
