CORE SUBJECT

Humanitarian ceasefire

The Sudanese Rapid Support Forces announced on Monday a unilateral humanitarian ceasefire lasting three months, following the declaration by Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan rejecting an international ceasefire proposal.

Rapid Support Forces commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo stated in a recorded speech: "We will commit to facilitating humanitarian work and allowing relief and medical teams to alleviate the suffering of Sudanese people."

He continued: "Justice will take its course according to international law, and no perpetrator of violations will escape punishment."

He added: "We agree to the participation of all parties in the political process in Sudan, except for the Islamic Movement and the Brotherhood."

He expressed hope that the Quadruple Group would play its role in urging the other party to respond to the humanitarian ceasefire in Sudan.

This step comes hours after Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan announced his refusal to accept mediation from the Quadruple Group to resolve the crisis that has plagued the country since the outbreak of war in April 2023.

Al-Burhan described the Quadruple Group's plan as "the worst paper presented because it cancels the existence of the armed forces, calls for the dissolution of all security agencies, and leaves the rebel militia in its areas."

Al-Burhan pledged to continue fighting until the Rapid Support Forces are eliminated, adding: "We are not advocates of war nor do we reject peace, but no one can threaten us or impose conditions on us."
