CORE SUBJECT
Diplomatic efforts to end the war
The office of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced on Monday that he informed his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin during a phone call that Ankara would contribute to any diplomatic effort to facilitate direct communication between Russia and Ukraine, and to reach a "just and lasting" peace.
For its part, the Kremlin stated that the Russian president and his Turkish counterpart discussed a US proposal to end the war in Ukraine.
The Kremlin clarified that "Putin mentioned that these proposals, in the reviewed format, align with the discussions that took place at the Russian-American summit in Alaska, and could, in principle, serve as a basis for a final peaceful resolution."
The Alaska summit witnessed a meeting between Putin and his American counterpart Donald Trump in August.
The Kremlin emphasized that "the interest of the Russian side lies in a political and diplomatic solution to the Ukrainian crisis."
The Kremlin confirmed Erdogan's commitment to supporting the peace process between Kyiv and Moscow by all means, and his proposal to hold new talks in Istanbul, which hosted three rounds of peace talks between Russia and Ukraine earlier this year.
