Strengthening the G20

French President Emmanuel Macron stated today, Saturday, that it is necessary to continue strengthening the G20 framework, which has faced difficulties in addressing major international crises.

Macron, in a speech delivered during the G20 Leaders' Summit held in Johannesburg, South Africa, pointed out that the group emerged from a desire to cooperate in finding solutions to various crises, especially economic ones.

He noted the difficulty of establishing a common standard for geopolitical crises within the G20, saying: "We find it very challenging to solve major international crises together around this table, including the members who are not present here today."

The French president emphasized that peace in Ukraine cannot be achieved without respecting the sovereignty of Ukrainians, adding: "Stability in the Middle East cannot be achieved without effective counter-terrorism and without respecting the sovereignty of all peoples, including the Palestinian people."

It is noteworthy that U.S. President Donald Trump is boycotting the summit, citing what he described as "racial discrimination based on race" against the white minority in South Africa.

The G20 Leaders' Summit in South Africa began today, Saturday, under the theme "Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability," with an official reception for the leaders attended by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

This summit is the first of its kind to be held on the African continent and is notable for being the first in which the African Union participates as a permanent member, which is seen as an important step to enhance the continent's role in the global governance system.

The G20 includes the European Union and the African Union, alongside 19 countries: "Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America."
