CORE SUBJECT
U.S. Peace Plan
With the White House confirming that the U.S. plan for ending the war between Russia and Ukraine is 'good and acceptable to both sides,' Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Moscow has not yet received Kyiv's approval to negotiate this plan.
Peskov said in press statements today, Friday: 'We have not yet been informed about Zelensky's agreement to negotiate Trump's peace plan,' according to the Russian news agency Sputnik.
By November 27
This comes after Ukrainian officials indicated that the United States expects Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to sign the 'peace plan' proposed by Washington to resolve the conflict by November 27.
According to leaks, Trump's plan included concessions of Ukrainian territories (Donbas and Crimea) in favor of Russia and reducing the size of the Ukrainian army to 600,000, as reported by the Associated Press.
The proposal also prevented the future expansion of NATO or the presence of its forces on Ukrainian territory, which is a significant victory for Moscow, which views the alliance as a potential threat to its strategic security.
Additionally, the proposal stipulated that Kyiv abandon its dream of joining NATO, which is an old Russian demand.
Furthermore, the plan indicated that parliamentary and presidential elections would be held in Ukraine after 100 days.
Security Guarantees
In return, Washington will provide security guarantees to Kyiv. In this context, an American official clarified that the draft peace agreement includes a commitment from the United States and its European allies to provide security guarantees to Kyiv similar to those of NATO, pledging to respond to any future attacks against it.
Moreover, $100 billion of frozen Russian assets will be allocated for the reconstruction of Ukraine. The path will also be opened for Russia's reintegration into the global economy, including the lifting of sanctions in the future.
Kyiv Studies the Proposal
However, some Ukrainian officials considered that this document effectively means the end of Ukraine's existence as an independent state.
Meanwhile, Rustem Umerov, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, announced that his country expects the other parties to respect its position while continuing to work with its American partners at the technical level in Kyiv today, Friday, to study the peace proposals presented by Washington. Umerov stated, 'We are carefully studying all proposals from our partners and expect the same sound approach towards our country's position.'
The European Union also reiterated its support for any plan that achieves a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.
