CORE SUBJECT
US Peace Plan
The White House emphasized on Thursday that the US peace plan, supported by President Donald Trump, which is being negotiated with Russia and Ukraine, is 'good' for both parties, rejecting concerns that it meets too many of Moscow's demands.
White House spokesperson Caroline Levitt stated in a press briefing, 'It is ongoing and evolving, but the president supports this plan. It is a good plan for both Russia and Ukraine, and we believe it will be acceptable to both sides.'
Levitt also clarified that US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Secretary of State Marco Rubio have been 'working quietly for a month' on this project 'to understand what these two countries might be willing (to offer) to reach a lasting peace.'
Ukrainian Readiness
In contrast, the office of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Thursday in a statement that Ukraine is ready to work with the US on the terms of the peace plan after the basic principles were outlined.
It added that the two sides (the US and Ukraine) agreed after today's meeting to work on the terms of the plan that would lead to a fair end to the war, reiterating that Ukraine has always chosen peace over war.
The statement also confirmed Kyiv's support for all substantive proposals capable of achieving real peace, especially as it has supported President Trump's proposals aimed at stopping the bloodshed since the beginning of this year.
Additionally, the statement announced readiness to work constructively with the US and European side to ensure peace.
Russian Response
For its part, Moscow confirmed that 'any settlement must address the root causes of the conflict' between the two countries.
Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesperson, stated on Thursday that any peace plan for Ukraine must eliminate the root causes of the conflict, according to Reuters.
28 Points
This came after the administration of President Donald Trump prepared a 28-point peace plan to end the war between Russia and Ukraine, according to US officials.
The proposal calls for Ukraine to hand over the entire Donbas region in the east of the country to Russia, including territories currently controlled by the Ukrainian armed forces, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The proposal also urges Ukraine to agree to abandon its dream of joining NATO for at least several years, without being allowed to deploy an international peacekeeping force within the country to deter any further Russian aggression.
In return, Ukraine would receive some form of security guarantees from the United States, with Russia pledging not to launch further attacks on Ukrainian territory or any other countries in Europe.
Moscow will formalize this commitment in clear legislation, according to officials.
