CORE SUBJECT
Morocco hosting the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and stadium details
In a first for the Africa Cup of Nations football finals, the 35th edition will be held in Morocco from December 21 to January 18, across nine stadiums, including four in the capital, Rabat.
Morocco is hosting the continental event for the second time in its history after 1988, when the tournament was limited to only two stadiums: the Mohammed V Sports Complex in Casablanca and the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex in Rabat.
Until recently, hosting was limited to just four stadiums, which expanded to six stadiums in the last three editions held in Egypt (2019), Cameroon (2021), and Ivory Coast (2024), alongside an increase in participating teams from 16 to 24.
However, Morocco, aiming for its second title since 1976 and preparing to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup with Spain and Portugal, decided to hold the continental finals across nine recently renovated stadiums completed in record time, with a strategic geographic distribution covering the north, center, and south of the kingdom, with an unprecedented concentration in the capital Rabat.
The nine stadiums are located in six cities: Rabat, Casablanca, Fez, Tangier, Marrakech, and Agadir, which are also the candidate cities to host the 2030 World Cup matches.
Morocco did not only prepare the main well-known stadiums but also rehabilitated secondary stadiums in the capital (the Post Stadium and the Olympic Stadium, which was entirely built and is dedicated to athletics with a track, and the Prince Moulay Hassan Stadium—all close and easily accessible for fans) to serve as official match venues, marking an organizational first.
Morocco hopes that this diverse lineup with world-class specifications will deliver an exceptional edition worthy of African football's reputation and the aspirations of fans eager to enjoy quality performances, sending a message ahead of hosting the global event, as it aims to host the final match in a new stadium currently under construction in the city of Benslimane, which will have a capacity of about 105,000 spectators.
The variety in stadium capacities, ranging from large to medium-sized, gives the organizing committee great flexibility in scheduling matches according to their importance and the popularity of the participating teams, ensuring full stands and creating an exciting atmosphere at every game.
The largest stadiums in the tournament will be Tangier Stadium (68,000) and Rabat's Moulay Abdellah Stadium (69,500), while the smallest is the Post Stadium in the capital with a capacity of 18,000.
The Moulay Abdellah Stadium, which reopened on September 5 after renovation works and hosted a qualifying match against Niger where the 'Atlas Lions' secured their spot in the 2026 World Cup, will host both the opening and final matches.
