CORE SUBJECT
Gas deal between Egypt and Israel and its economic and political impact
Dr. Diaa Rashwan, Chairman of the General Authority for Information, stated that every dollar paid in the gas deal with Israel will go to the American company Chevron.
He added during a phone interview on the program "Al-Hekaya" hosted by journalist Amr Adib on the "MBC Masr" channel on Friday evening, that the Israeli side will not receive any financial compensation from Egypt, but rather this company is responsible for the exploration.
He explained that all Israeli gas exports represent only 0.6% of Israel's GDP, pointing out that the portion exported to Egypt is so small that the deal will not add anything to the Israeli economy.
Rashwan noted that funds flow from other countries' economies to the United States, which provides significant support to Israel, clarifying that the agreement does not prevent Egypt from taking any measures it wishes based on sovereign rights.
He pointed out that Egypt's gasification capacities at liquefaction plants exceed by multiples the volume received from Israel, citing that the country was not affected when supplies from Israel were stopped, and therefore the deal does not represent any control by Israel over Egypt in any economic sector.
On the political level, Rashwan confirmed that the deal cannot represent any pressure on Egypt, explaining that during the Gaza war, much greater pressures were exerted on Egypt than those related to the gas file, yet Egypt did not retreat in any way.
He cited the change in former U.S. President Donald Trump's position from calling for the displacement of Palestinians to a completely opposing stance, emphasizing that the Egyptian position, which was threatened by a real war that could hit the region, was not affected or moved even slightly. Consequently, the Israeli gas, which represents 12% of Egypt's industrial needs, does not influence Egypt's stance.
