CORE SUBJECT
Achievements of Moroccan coaches in football
Moroccan coaches have written a new chapter in Arab football over the past three years by achieving significant global, continental, and regional accomplishments. The latest of these was Tariq Al-Sektawi leading the "Atlas Lions" to win the Arab Cup in Qatar yesterday, after a 3-2 victory over the Jordanian national team, which reached the final under the leadership of another Moroccan coach, Jamal Al-Salmi. It is worth noting that Al-Sektawi previously led the Moroccan national team to win the bronze medal in football at the 2024 Olympic Games.
The achievements of Moroccan coaches began with Walid Regragui leading his national team to finish fourth in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, an unprecedented achievement for Arab and African teams. This journey included victories over strong teams such as Spain in the round of 16, despite Regragui being appointed as the national team coach shortly before the tournament, replacing coach Vahid Halilhodžić. Prior to that, Regragui was named one of the best club coaches in the world for 2022 by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS), following his successes with Fath Rabat, Wydad Casablanca, and Al-Duhail SC.
Coach Mohamed Wahbi led the Moroccan youth team to win the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile 2025, after defeating Argentina 2-0 in the final, securing a historic title that is the first in the history of Moroccan and Arab football and the second in Africa after Ghana's achievement in 2009. Additionally, coach Nabil Baha led the Moroccan U-17 team to win the African U-17 Cup of Nations held in Morocco in 2025.
