CORE SUBJECT
Release of new documents and photos from Jeffrey Epstein's estate to pressure the Trump administration
Democratic members of the U.S. Congress on Thursday released a new set of photos related to Jeffrey Epstein, convicted of sexual crimes, on the eve of the deadline set for President Donald Trump's administration to publish documents related to the businessman convicted of involvement in a vast sex trafficking network who died in prison.
The 68 new photos are part of 95,000 images lawmakers said last week they received from Epstein's heirs.
The release aims to pressure the administration to publish the documents related to the New York businessman by no later than Friday, as stipulated by a law signed by Trump a month ago.
The law, signed by President Trump on November 19, gives the Department of Justice a 30-day deadline until December 19 to publish all non-classified documents in its possession related to Epstein and his "partner" Ghislaine Maxwell, who is serving a 20-year prison sentence, as well as all individuals involved in the legal proceedings.
The latest batch of photos includes close-up shots of sentences from the book "Lolita," a story about a man's obsession with a 12-year-old girl, written in black ink on a woman's body—specifically on her chest, foot, neck, and back—along with identity cards, with details redacted for publication, of women from Russia, Morocco, Italy, the Czech Republic, South Africa, Ukraine, and Lithuania. It also includes a late-night text conversation about sending girls to a person identified as "J" for $1,000 each.
Democrats from the House Oversight Committee released 19 photos last week, including some showing President Trump, who described the photos as "irrelevant."
The latest photos also show billionaire Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft; linguistics professor and political activist Noam Chomsky; and former Trump aide Steve Bannon.
Democrats on the committee said the photos released Thursday "were selected to provide the public with transparency about a representative sample of the photos" and "to offer insight into Epstein's network and his deeply disturbing activities."
They noted they have thousands of other photos and are continuing to analyze them.
Representative Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the Oversight Committee, said, "Democrats on the Oversight Committee will continue to release photos and documents from Epstein's estate to provide transparency to the American people," adding, "We must end this cover-up by the White House, and the Department of Justice must release Epstein's files now."
White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson said the events "change nothing," adding in a statement, "President Trump always calls for transparency regarding Epstein's files, and his administration has responded accordingly."
Epstein's death, found hanged in his New York jail cell on August 10, 2019, before his trial on sexual assault charges, sparked a wave of conspiracy theories, with proponents especially suggesting he was murdered to cover up a scandal involving prominent figures.
