CORE SUBJECT
Negotiations to End the Russia-Ukraine Conflict
Donald Trump urged Ukraine on Thursday to "move quickly" in negotiations on a plan aimed at ending the conflict with Russia.
The U.S. president told reporters in the Oval Office that negotiators are "on the verge of reaching something, but I hope Ukraine moves quickly... every time they delay, Russia changes its mind."
Russian and American envoys are scheduled to hold a meeting this weekend in Miami, Florida.
Trump is striving to reach a swift agreement to end the fighting, and negotiation teams have proposed draft plans to end the war that erupted due to the Russian invasion in 2022.
A White House official told AFP that U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner are expected to meet with Ukrainian negotiator Rustem Umerov in Florida this weekend.
This new round of talks comes after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke of "progress" toward a settlement between Kyiv and Washington on the content of a plan to be presented to Moscow to end the fighting, following meetings in Berlin involving U.S., Ukrainian, and European officials.
However, Zelensky warned that Russia is preparing for a new "year of war" in 2026.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed on Wednesday that the objectives of his military campaign in Ukraine "will be achieved without the slightest doubt."
The details of the U.S. plan, after being revised with the Ukrainians in Berlin meetings, remain unknown, but Kyiv has indicated it includes concessions on territorial issues.
The United States announced that the latest version includes "very strong" security guarantees favorable to Ukraine and acceptable to Russia.
Kyiv and its European allies consider the basic formula of Washington’s plan to largely meet the Kremlin’s demands.
