For as action-packed as the Seattle Seahawks' rapid comeback was in the fourth quarter against the Los Angeles Rams, the punctuating score that tied the game came in bizarre fashion.
After the Seahawks trailed by 16 points with just over 8 minutes left in regulation, they got a punt return touchdown from wide receiver Rashid Shaheed. They converted the two-point conversion on a pass from Sam Darnold to Cooper Kupp. After forcing a three-and-out, Seattle got the ball back and scored a touchdown two plays later to close the gap to a 30-28 deficit. The Seahawks attempted a two-point conversion to tie the game, with Darnold bringing running back Zach Charbonnet in motion wide to the left. Charbonnet stopped with two receivers in front of him when the ball was snapped and Darnold threw the ball in Charbonnet's direction. Rams defensive end Jared Verse broke through the line of scrimmage and deflected the pass.
The ball ricocheted just over the goal line. Players from both sides appeared to think the play was over as an incomplete pass and a failed two-point attempt. Charbonnet nonchalantly went to the end zone and picked up the ball. As the teams lined up for a kickoff, there was an extended pause, with an announcement coming that the officials were reviewing the two-point conversion attempt.
After a review, referee Brad Allen made an announcement that ignited a huge cheer from the Seattle crowd.
"After reviewing the play, the quarterback threw a backward pass, which was recovered in the end zone by the offense," Allen said. "It is a successful conversion."
The play capped off a span of 3:13 of game time in which the score went from a 30-14 Rams lead to a tied game at 30-30 with 6:23 to play.
