Hungary's refusal to finance Ukraine
BUDAPEST, December 19. /TASS/. Leaders of European Union countries continue to discuss ways to finance Ukraine during their summit in Brussels, but Hungary will not support their plans in any case, said Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
The Hungarian leader had previously warned that his country would not support either the expropriation of frozen Russian assets or a joint EU loan to Ukraine.
"Negotiations are still ongoing in Brussels, but it seems the parties have concluded that Hungary will not agree to issue the loan [to Ukraine]. There is a strong possibility that, regardless of the type of aid they want to provide to Ukraine, Hungary will stay out of it," he wrote on Facebook (banned in Russia, owned by Meta Corporation, recognized as extremist in Russia).
According to reports from Hungarian media from Brussels, participants in the meeting took a one-hour break on Thursday evening and then resumed their discussions. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said earlier that no one would be allowed to leave the summit until a decision on financing Ukraine had been made. The meeting is expected to last two days, but European Council President Antonio Costa said it could continue until Saturday if necessary.
