CORE SUBJECT
Pressure on the Trump administration to disclose documents related to Jeffrey Epstein's case
Democratic lawmakers in the U.S. Congress released a new set of photos related to businessman Jeffrey Epstein on Thursday, ahead of the deadline set by a law signed by President Donald Trump that requires his administration to disclose documents related to the case.
The 68 photos released on Thursday are part of a larger collection of 95,000 images that lawmakers announced last week they had received from the heirs of Epstein, who was convicted in sex trafficking cases and died in prison in 2019.
This move is part of the pressure on the Trump administration to disclose documents related to Epstein, according to the law Trump signed last month.
Democratic members of a key House committee stated in a post on the X platform that "the time has come for the Department of Justice to release the files related to Epstein."
Content of the Photos
Some photos show Epstein on various occasions with prominent figures such as Steve Bannon, Trump's former advisor, leftist thinker Noam Chomsky, and film director Woody Allen.
The photos also include passports and identity cards of women from Ukraine, Russia, and South Africa, with their names and faces redacted.
Epstein had connections with several famous figures in politics, business, and entertainment, making his death a subject of much controversy and conspiracy theories. He was found hanged in a New York jail on August 10, 2019.
Epstein Case Back in the Spotlight
After a campaign in which he promised to reveal what he called "shocking truths" about the Epstein case, Trump surprised his supporters months ago by urging them to move past the issue, calling the entire case a "hoax" orchestrated by his Democratic opponents.
However, Trump was unable to block the passage of legislation in Congress aimed at increasing transparency in the case, which led him to sign the law into effect on November 19.
The legislation requires the U.S. Department of Justice to release all non-classified documents related to Epstein and his partner Ghislaine Maxwell, who is currently serving a lengthy prison sentence after being convicted on human trafficking charges, before December 19.
Epstein's death before his trial on sexual assault charges reignited a wide wave of conspiracy theories, especially those suggesting he was killed to cover up the involvement of influential figures in the scandal.
Last week, Democratic lawmakers released photos showing Trump alongside women whose faces were obscured, as well as images of Epstein with former Democratic President Bill Clinton, former British Prince Andrew, Steve Bannon, Woody Allen, and prominent businessmen such as Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft, and Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin Group.
Trump, who had ties to Epstein during the 1990s, insists he was unaware of any criminal activity and emphasizes that he cut ties with Epstein long before legal actions against him began.
