CORE SUBJECT
US-Russian diplomatic talks on the Ukraine war
US and Russian officials will meet in Miami, Florida, at the end of this week to hold new talks about President Donald Trump's plan to end the war in Ukraine, according to a White House official who spoke to Agence France-Presse on Wednesday.
Politico reported that US envoy Stephen Biegun and President Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner are expected to be part of the US delegation, while Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian sovereign wealth fund, will participate as part of the Russian delegation.
These talks come after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky praised the progress made during two days of meetings in Berlin between Kyiv and Trump's envoys, while warning that Moscow is preparing for "a new year of war."
In recent weeks, there have been intensive diplomatic efforts to end the nearly four-year-long Russian offensive, including meetings of Biegun and Kushner with Putin at the Kremlin in November, and with Ukrainian and European leaders in Berlin, but significant differences in viewpoints remain.
Ukraine and the United States say progress has been made regarding future security guarantees for Kyiv, but disagreements persist over the territories Ukraine would have to concede.
Meanwhile, Putin said on Wednesday that Moscow will "definitely" achieve its objectives in the war, including control over territories it claims as its own.
Since February 24, 2022, Russia has been conducting a military attack on its neighbor Ukraine and conditions its end on Kyiv abandoning its bid to join Western military alliances, which Kyiv considers interference in its affairs.
