Donald Trump's economic policy in 2025
Washington (United States) (AFP) - Donald Trump aims to convince Americans, mostly disappointed by his economic policy, that the year 2025 has already been "excellent" and that "the best is yet to come," in a televised address on Wednesday.
"I will make a national address tomorrow night, live from the White House, at 9:00 p.m." (02:00 GMT), the American president announced Tuesday on his Truth Social network.
"The message tonight will be that we inherited a disaster, we have done a tremendous job and we continue, and our country will be stronger than ever," he told reporters on Wednesday.
"He will speak to the country about his historic successes this year" and "will lift the veil on some decisions coming next year," according to his spokesperson Karoline Leavitt, in an interview Tuesday with Fox News.
"Best economy in history"
The positive vision of the American president, who since his return to power on January 20 has taken a sharp protectionist and nationalist turn, contrasts with the concern expressed in polls about the cost of living.
According to a PBS News/NPR/Marist opinion poll published Wednesday, 61% of Americans feel the economic situation is not favorable to them personally, compared to 57% in May.
Americans' disappointment with Donald Trump's economic policy, largely based on tariffs, worries Republicans less than a year before the midterm elections.
Some conservatives have called on the American president to focus more on domestic issues, at a time when speculation is rife, particularly about his military intentions in Venezuela.
Donald Trump, after a rally last week in Pennsylvania (northeast), will be in North Carolina (southeast) on Friday to try to mobilize voters.
He recently expressed his frustration with the polls, writing on his Truth Social network: "When will people finally say that I have created, without inflation, perhaps the best economy in our country's history? When will people understand what is happening?"
"Bringing back jobs and money"
In an interview with Politico, the 79-year-old billionaire rated the economy "25/20" (A+++++).
While Donald Trump maintains that the economic situation is better than his compatriots perceive, other officials are asking Americans to be patient, blaming the previous president, Democrat Joe Biden, for the high cost of living.
One of the White House's top economic advisors, Kevin Hassett, responded Tuesday to the rise in the unemployment rate in November by reminding that economic growth remains strong and stating: "Generally, job creation follows."
He predicted it would take six months for industrial employment to rebound, thanks to investments made possible by the American president.
Voters "know that Rome wasn't built in a day. They know that what Joe Biden broke won't be fixed in a week," said Vice President JD Vance during a rally Tuesday in Pennsylvania.
"We must persevere. We must continue to work to bring good jobs and money back to the United States," he added.
