CORE SUBJECT

Mechanism Committee Meeting and President Aoun's Instructions

President Michel Joseph Aoun met with the head of the negotiating delegation in the "Mechanism," former ambassador Simon Karam, and provided him with his instructions ahead of the scheduled committee meeting next Friday.

At the same time, Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Elias Bou Saab, speaking from Baabda Palace, confirmed that talk about appointing ambassadors other than Ambassador Simon Karam to the "Mechanism" committee is media speculation, and no request has been made to add other names.

He said, "The work of the President of the Republic with the Mechanism Committee through Ambassador Simon Karam is reassuring, comfortable, and more than excellent."

He added, "We discussed the parliamentary entitlement and the current obstacles facing it, as disputes and challenges do not lead to holding parliamentary elections," stressing that "an electoral law cannot be approved without political consensus."

He said, "There is a tendency to reopen deadlines, which means a technical postponement of the elections in any case."

Senior officials held the fourteenth meeting of the Lebanese Technical Military Committee (the Mechanism) in Naqoura to assess ongoing efforts to reach a permanent arrangement to stop hostilities in Lebanon.

The Lebanese Presidency entrusted Ambassador Simon Karam with chairing the Lebanese delegation in the "Mechanism."

The official spokesperson for the Presidency, Najat Sharafeddine, broadcast the presidential statement.

Meanwhile, Israel confirmed that direct talks, the first in decades, took place between Israeli and Lebanese officials as part of the monitoring mechanism for the ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah that was concluded a year ago.

Israeli government spokesperson Shosh Badressian told reporters that "today's meeting in Lebanon is an initial attempt to lay the foundation for an economic relationship and cooperation between Israel and Lebanon."
